Terms of Service
Last updated: 22 May 2026
These terms are a contract between you and Selah (operated by Pirow Engelbrecht), the operator of Selah. By creating an account or paying for a subscription you agree to them. We have tried to write them in plain language, as required by the South African Consumer Protection Act.
1. Who we are
Selah is operated by Selah (operated by Pirow Engelbrecht).
Registered address: [TODO_LEGAL: Physical business address — required by POPIA s.18 and ECT s.43]
Registration: [TODO_LEGAL: Company registration number, or 'Sole proprietor — N/A']
VAT: [TODO_LEGAL: VAT number if registered, otherwise leave blank]

2. What Selah is
Selah is a Bible-study and Scripture-memorisation service delivered as a web application. We provide access to canonical Bible texts in public-domain and licensed translations, interactive study tools, a journey system, fellowships, and AI-assisted study notes.
Some content is generated by AI models (e.g. study notes, journey cover art). We mark this clearly. The canonical Bible text is never AI-generated.
3. Your account
You must be at least 18 years old, or have the consent of a parent or guardian if you are between 13 and 17. You agree to provide accurate information at sign-up and to keep your account credentials secure. You are responsible for activity on your account.
4. Subscriptions, trials, and pricing
Free trial
New subscribers receive a 7-day free trial. We require valid card details to start a trial so we can convert you to a paid subscription automatically if you decide to continue. You will not be charged during the trial.
Conversion
At the end of the trial we will charge the subscription fee shown on the checkout page in South African Rand (ZAR), and again at the end of each subsequent billing period (monthly or annual, whichever you chose).
Reminders
We email you 2 days before your trial converts so you have time to cancel. You can change or cancel your subscription at any time from Profile → Membership.
Cancellation
You can cancel at any time, with no notice period and no cancellation fee. When you cancel, you keep full access until the end of the period you have already paid for. After that, your account moves to the free plan. Your streak, journeys, fellowships, and journal entries stay safe.
Refunds
Trial: we do not charge during the trial, so no refund is needed if you cancel before it ends.
Within 5 business days of charging (Consumer Protection Act, cooling-off for direct marketing): if you signed up after a direct marketing message from us and have not used the paid features beyond what is reasonable to evaluate them, you may cancel and receive a refund of the amount paid.
Outside the cooling-off period: our subscriptions are non-refundable once charged, but you can cancel future renewals at any time. Where the Consumer Protection Act gives you a stronger right, that right always applies.
Price changes
If we change the price, we will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before the new price applies to your next renewal. You can cancel before the new price takes effect.
Tax
Prices include any applicable South African VAT.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Selah for anything illegal, abusive, or that infringes someone else's rights.
- Try to break, overload, or reverse-engineer the service.
- Scrape or republish our content beyond what fair-dealing allows.
- Impersonate other users or misrepresent your affiliation.
- Upload anything to your profile or to fellowships that is hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, or otherwise harmful.
We may suspend or close accounts that breach these rules. If we do, we will tell you why and give you a reasonable chance to respond, unless we are prevented by law or by an active investigation.
6. Your content
Anything you create in Selah — journal entries, notes, fellowship posts — remains yours. You grant us only the limited rights we need to store it, display it back to you, and share it with the audience you choose (e.g. a fellowship). You can delete your content at any time.
7. Our content and IP
The Selah brand, software, design, illustrations, and curated study materials are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. You may use them only as part of the Selah service. Public-domain Bible translations are not owned by us; licensed translations remain the property of their rights-holders.
8. Service changes
We will keep improving Selah, which means features will be added, changed, or removed over time. We will give reasonable notice of any change that materially reduces the value of a paid subscription.
9. Liability
To the maximum extent allowed by South African law, our total liability to you for any claim arising out of these terms or the Selah service is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including the rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act.
10. Suspension and termination
You can close your account at any time from Profile → Privacy → Delete my account. We can suspend or close your account for serious or repeated breaches of these terms, or where we are required to do so by law.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by South African law. Any dispute that cannot be resolved by talking to us will be referred to the courts of South Africa. Where the Consumer Protection Act applies, you may also approach the National Consumer Commission or the relevant ombud.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. For material changes we will notify you by email at least 30 days before they take effect, and the “last updated” date above will reflect the change.
